  18. <p>    Some eras produce stage epics. Ours is a jewel-box age.
  19. Most noteworthy American plays of recent years have been small
  20. in scale and ambition, wistful rather than robust. Few have been
  21. tinier, or more beautiful, than this tender sketch of the bond
  22. between two people who cannot live with, or without, each other.
  23. The story of Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III
  24. begins in second grade and spans a half-century. Their wry and
  25. poignant tale is told entirely through letters, from the first
  26. scrawled valentines of childhood to a last, guilty unburdening
  27. of things that cannot be said face to face.

  29. <p>    Everything about the play is a little nostalgic, from the
  30. furtive references to Kickapoo joy juice to the very means of
  31. communication the never wed lovers choose, a stubbornly
  32. sustained anachronism in the times of phone and fax. But then,
  33. playwright A.R. Gurney (The Dining Room, The Cocktail Hour) has
  34. been hailed through his career as a valedictorian, bidding a
  35. fond if sardonic farewell to Wasp manners and mores. What makes
  36. this Gurney's finest work, and one of the four or five best
  37. American plays of the '80s, is its un-Waspy ease with emotion.
  38. </p>
  39. <p>    In performance, the lovers sit and read, never moving
  40. around, never even gazing into each other's eyes. This oddly
  41. effective staging permits equally unusual casting: the players
  42. change every week. During a limited off-Broadway run, the roster
  43. will include actresses of such varying type and age as Colleen
  44. Dewhurst, Swoosie Kurtz and Elaine Stritch; actors as different
  45. as Jason Robards, Richard Thomas and Edward Herrmann. All will
  46. be challenged to match the opening-week performances of John
  47. Rubinstein and, especially, Stockard Channing. They found, in
  48. even the shallowest salutations, chasms of suffering.
